Indo-Pacific: from East Africa, to the islands of the Central Pacific, north to Japan and Hawaii, and south to southern Melanesia and New Zealand; might also occur in northern Australia. Tropical to subtropical.

Incidental bycatch in fishing nets (Ref. 349). On fine sand and mud bottoms (Refs. 821, 126564). Common at depths of about 10 m or more. In Hawaii, it is found on the outer edge of fringing reefs, at depths of more than 30 m (Ref. 349).

Members of the order Neotaenioglossa are mostly gonochoric and broadcast spawners. Life cycle: Embryos develop into planktonic trocophore larvae and later into juvenile veligers before becoming fully grown adults.
