Total population is estimated between 4,500,000 and 10 million birds. There is an observed population decline towards the end of the 19th century although their range has extended northwards (Ref. 84934). This is known as a noisy, gregarious but timid species which are found to nest in burrows (Ref. 91362). Pursuit diving (Ref. 356).
