Only oscular areas are visible as orange-yellow patches. Buried surfaces or free sides have circular grooves, contracting when handled and forming warts. Encrusting. Consistency: crumbly, soft.

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
