Remark

Author: Ref. 346. The mantle is broad and weakly muscled. Tentacles reduced or absent in subadults and absent in adults. Arms with hooks in 2 series, replaced by suckers near armtips. Fins large, broad, muscular; fused to one another along dorsal mantle midline; length nearly equals mantle length. Some or all arms terminate in light organs. Mature males lack a hectocotylus but have a large penis that can extend well beyond the mantle opening. Large muscular fins apparently provide most of the force for swimming. At least 1 species, Taningia danae, potentially interesting for fisheries purposes (Ref. 104052).
