Description Also known as the Banda Sea LME, this system of about 400,000 km2, including the Arafura Basin, falls entirely within the jurisdiction of Indonesia. A tropical LME, it is heavily influenced by annual and interannual variations in surface temperature due to monsoon effects, and, to a partial extent, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon. These variations drive seasonal cycles of primary and secondary productivity. Pelagic fish resources appear to be significantly higher during the periods of seasonal upwelling, and are largely underexploited. Little is known of the status of the ecosystem with regard to pollution or coastal habitat alteration (http://www.na.nmfs.gov/lme/text/lme38.htm).
