Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Occurs on sandy, gravel, coral and broken-shell bottoms (Ref. 104219). Also on deep reef (Ref. 104217). Members of the family Xanthidae range from being algal scrapers to aggressive predators (Ref. 103027). Life cycle: Eggs hatch into pre-zoeae larvae of short duration, undergo four zoeal stages, later molt into megalopa stage before further molting into adult or sexual stage (Ref. 104789). Mating behavior: Precopulatory courtship ritual is common (through olfactory and tactile cues); usually indirect sperm transfer (Ref. 833).
