Vivid red. Thickly branching, up to 30 cm in height (Ref. 89939).
Found in patchy assemblages. Suspension feeder; preyed on by starfishes. Derivatives have antitumor and antiviral properties, thus are being tested as potential anti-cancer drugs (Ref. 89939). Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge (Ref. 833).
