Mainly inhabits brackish waters, wherein it occurs as thick beds in estuaries, backwaters, ports and harbors. Though sporadic, it is also found from the intertidal zone to a depth of about 4 m (Ref. 101354). Feeds on diatoms, zooplankton and detritus (Ref. 107090). Members of the class Bivalvia are mostly gonochoric, some are protandric hermaphrodites. Life cycle: Embryos develop into free-swimming trocophore larvae, succeeded by the bivalve veliger, resembling a miniature clam (Ref. 833).
