Western Atlantic: from USA to Suriname and French Guiana. Pérez Farfante recognizes 2 subspecies: Acetes americanus americanus from Puerto Rico to Brazil and Acetes americanus carolinae from USA to French Guiana (Ref. 75620).
This is an epipelagic species (Ref. 83922), known from shallow coastal waters (Ref. 8). Members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric. Mating behavior: Precopulatory courtship ritual is common (through olfactory and tactile cues); usually indirect sperm transfer (Ref. 833).
