Definition of Term

true hermaphroditism
(English) A form of hermaphroditism in which each individual is simultaneously male and female and can release either sperm or eggs while spawning, with the possibility of self-fertilization. Exists in certain serranid species and several other fish families. See also 'synchronous hermaphroditism'. (See also: hermaphroditic, synchronous hermaphroditism, simultaneous hermaphroditism)
