Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits the open ocean. Feeds by scavenging and surface-seizing. Exhibits pattering and dipping behavior (Ref. 356). Breeds on oceanic islands (Ref. 91362). Nesting areas are characterized with supporting bunch grass (Lepturus sp.), large clumps of weeds (Boerhaavia sp.) or Sesuvium, and loose rocks (Ref. 96995). Breeding distribution ranges in the central Pacific islands. Copulation occurs on the nest site, where birds utter a soft guttural "GRRRRR-GRRRRR-GRRRR" from the nest cavity. Both (sexes) birds incubate. They lay only one single egg, occasionally a bird can be found incubating 2 eggs but the other one is infertile (Ref. 96995).
