Carapace hexagonal, transversely ovate to transversely hexagonal, sometimes almost circular; dorsal surface generally relatively flat, often ridged or granulose; front broad, margin usually multidentate; 5 to 9 teeth on each anterolateral margin; posterolateral margins usually distinctly converging. Last pair of legs with distal 2 segments wider and more flattened than these segments of previous legs, in most species the dactylus is oval and paddle-shaped, adapted for swimming purposes, none of the dactyli with conspicuous spines. Male abdominal segments 3 to 5 completely fused, immovable (Ref. 104052).
